H3G and TIM signed an agreement for roaming, direct interconnection and, for the first time in Italy, UMTS sitesharing

date: December 21, 2001

H3G and TIM have today signed an agreement for roaming. The agreement will allow H3G as the first Italian mobile multimedia operator (owned 78,3% by Hutchison Whampoa) to offer its customers GSM services using the TIM network which is the most widespread in Italy, in areas not covered by UMTS, while in anticipation of the completion of its very own third generation network.

The agreement also provides for direct interconnection between the two networks and for the first agreement for the sharing of the UMTS sites stipulated in Italy.

Tim S.p.A. (Telecom Italia Group) is one of the mobile operators worldwide and the number one operator in the Italian market. As of September 30, 2001 TIM counted 23.3 million lines in Italy alone. Worldwide TIM Group, reached a total target of 52.8 million mobile lines in September 2001 including Telecom Italia stakes.

H3G was set up with the purpose of becoming the first Multi-Media Mobile Operator on the Italian market. Upon obtaining a UMTS license in Italy under the name Andala in November 2000, with an offer of ITL. 6,300 billions, H3G is now aiming at taking on the leadership in the 3G mobile business. Its shareholders include first-rate Italian and international players in telecommunications, Internet and the new media, publishing and banking. Hutchison Whampoa is the majority shareholder with 78.3% of the corporate capital, followed by CIR (12.9%), S. Paolo Imi (5%), BMI (2%), HDP (1%), Gemina (0.5%), and Tiscali (0.3%).
