DoCoMo positive in future FOMA take-upsdate: December 23, 2001 NTT DoCoMo, the wireless mobile phone operators that released the world's first 3G FOMA mobile phone service, said its 3G service will cover 97% of the population of Japan in two years' time. Currently FOMA serves only the Tokyo area. FOMA (Freedom Of Mobile multimedia Access) is the brand name used in Japan for NTT DoCoMo's 3G service. DoCoMo also expects 6 million of DoCoMo's mobile phone customers will be using FOMA service by March 2004, and thinks it will be the standard on all mobile phones in a decade. DoCoMo launched the 'P2101V Videophone' handset (with built-in video camera) on 1st October alongside the started of the FOMA service and said it has already revolutionized the way we work. Real estate agents already use it to show clients the exterior and interior of houses they are trying to sell. Supervisors of building projects already use it to monitor progresses from remote locations, rather than either visiting the site every day or not managing to see it enough. Parents who are concerned about their young children, use it to see images of kindergarten classroom that is being relayed by mobile phone to an internet site, which will turn be accessed by the P2101V. "I believe there are many different ways to use the system", said, Keiji Tachikawa, president and CEO of DoCoMo and added ". . .it is a sophisticated service. It will have corporate users who will develop their own ways to use it."
