Norway launches 3Gdate: December 28, 2001 To the list of first 3G voice calls placed on Ericsson equipment, add Norway. Ericsson and Telenor crossed the 3G threshold in late November. "The live call using commercial equipment is yet another step in our rollout plan designed to ensure our customers like Telenor to have an early market launch," says Vice President Mikael Kruhsberg at Ericsson Norway. "I see this as the first natural step in our ambition to support Telenor in building the most extensive 3G-network in Norway offering the best Mobile Internet services to the Norwegian subscribers," says Kruhsberg. Indeed, by December 1st, Telenor launched its 3G network in line with the license requirements. It operates for voice transmission only at this point due to a lack of terminals and services. Still, being one of the first countries to release the new technology secures a leading position for both Norway and Ericsson when services are widely available. Mikael Kruhsberg, Vice President at Ericsson Norway (ETO), says the release is important for testing and further development. He adds that new applications are under development, and 3G terminals could be available on the market within next year. "We look forward to a close relationship with Telenor Mobil," says Kruhsberg, "…to further develop and incorporate functionality in to the network, and to support Telenor in launching consumer-driven applications." The first rollout will cover central parts of the capitol and will give coverage to approximately 200,000 users. Ericsson is the sole supplier of the core network and one of two delivering the radio network. Ericsson has an industry lead in 3G deployment. Today 30 operators have received 3G-systems (WCDMA) based on commercial 3GPP compliant products from Ericsson. By January 2002 the number is expected to grow to 50 operators.
