UWCC Completes Organizational Objectives

date: December 30, 2001

The Universal Wireless Communications Consortium LLC (UWCC) announced that its Board of Governors has voted to dissolve the organization in the near future.

"The UWCC has successfully served its mission to develop and promote TDMA, EDGE, and WIN technologies and their interoperability with GSM and WCDMA (UMTS) over the past five years," stated Frank Urbany, Chairman of the UWCC Board of Governors. "After careful consideration, the UWCC Board of Governors have reached the decision that the Consortium will come to an orderly conclusion since technical development work on TDMA has been completed and further implementation of 3G technical strategies can be accomplished through the recently announced new organization for TDMA and GSM communities in the Americas."

The UWCC, a Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Market Representation Partner, served an integral role in the global success of TDMA and EDGE standards. TDMA is currently the number one technology in the Americas in terms of operators, subscribers, and coverage. Chris Pearson, Executive Vice President of the UWCC stated, "Over the years the UWCC made many contributions to the wireless industry." He added, "Of particular significance was the acceptance by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) of 'UWC-136' - our 3G submission that includes EDGE and is one of only five accepted and approved 3G standards by ITU."

While serving its mission for seamless global communications, the UWCC set the stage for TDMA operators' migration to GPRS/EDGE and WCDMA (UMTS) technologies by entering into agreements with the GSM community and its representative organizations to continue work on GAIT (GSM ANSI-136 Interoperability Team) and other projects.

"The UWCC was organized in 1996 to serve as TDMA's voice to the world in the wireless industry," commented Umesh Amin, Chairman Emeritus of the UWCC, "Our work has brought us to a point of development of TDMA and convergence with the GSM community that completes our UWCC organizational goals. With the recent announcement of a new organization encompassing TDMA, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, and WCDMA (UMTS) for the Americas, it is the logical next step for the UWCC to close its doors."

The UWCC will continue operations for a short period of time to ensure a smooth and orderly shutdown of operations.
