Lucent sees growing momentum for 3G

December 4, 2002

Speaking at ITU Telecom Asia 2002 in Hong Kong, Scott Erickson, senior vice president of Mobility Solutions at Lucent Technologies, said Lucent expects that spread spectrum technology, the basis of both the CDMA2000 and UMTS 3G wireless standards, will make up 75% of the global mobility market by 2005, up from 30% this year. Erickson also said that telecom operators in Asia Pacific are among those in the forefront of the worldwide migration to 3G networks.

Additionally, several recent reports from leading industry research firms indicate that spread-spectrum technologies (including CDMA2000 1X, CDMA2000 1X EV, and UMTS/Wideband CDMA) will account for more than half of all new wireless subscribers worldwide by 2005, and that adoption of spread spectrum will continue to accelerate through 2007.

Lucent's recent 3G CDMA contracts with leading Asia Pacific service providers will significantly enhance the mobile services available to subscribers in four key markets, namely China, India, Korea and New Zealand.

China Unicom will deploy Lucent's CDMA 1X equipment under the second phase of a CDMA wireless contract. Building on successful testing and demonstrations of the CDMA 1X technology by the two partners, the deployment will enable China Unicom to offer high-speed wireless data services throughout an extensive service area in 10 provinces. The CDMA 1X enhancements will also provide additional capacity of about five million subscribers by January 2003.

KTF, a Korean wireless service provider, selected Lucent to upgrade its 2G network in the Kyungsang province to CDMA2000 1X, doubling voice capacity and enabling high-speed data services such as wireless Internet access and video streaming at speeds of up to 153 kbps. Lucent will provide KTF with 3G services by simply adding channel cards and making software upgrades to hundreds of existing Lucent-supplied base stations.

Reliance Infocom, a service provider in India, will roll out a nationwide 3G CDMA2000 wireless network based on Lucent Flexent base stations -- which support 3G CDMA2000 1X service - and mobile switching centers. The five-year contract covers this equipment, as well as design and consulting services, and installation and maintenance support.

Tata Teleservices, India's private basic telephony service provider, will also deploy Lucent's Flexent base stations and mobile switching centers to create high-speed 3G CDMA2000 wireless networks in several Indian states.

Telecom New Zealand has upgraded its CDMA network to create the first 3G CDMA2000 1X wireless network in the Australia-New Zealand region. Lucent has supplied CDMA2000 1X channel cards and software to enhance existing Lucent-supplied base stations, along with software upgrades for several mobile switching centers.
