mmO2 may launch full 3G service in late 2003
December 4, 2002
mmO2 does not expect to launch commercial 3G mobile service in
the UK until late 2003 said Mark Short, vice president of technology
at mmO2.
Short said the rollout of 3G service depends on the availability
of dual mode handsets, customer demand for the applications and
on technical stability. He said that manufacturers expect dual mode
handsets to be readily available from Q3 or Q4.
mmO2 has not yet committed itself to a target for what proportion
of the UK the 3G service will cover. "We probably won't do that
until the end of the first quarter," Short said.
Of the five UK 3G license holders, only Hutchison 3G have indicated
they may rollout 3G services by the end of the year. But recent
rumours suggest the operator may not be able to launch 3G until
early next year. Vodafone said they will trial 3G services early
next year and aims to launch commercial services by the summer.
