KPN confirms its 3G investment plan
December 5, 2002
Dutch telecoms group KPN said on Wednesday it would invest €1.4
billion ($1.4 billion) in developing its 3G mobile networks in Germany,
Belgium and the Netherlands by end-2005.
The operator was responding reports in several German newspapers
which cited Chief Executive Ad Scheepbouwer as saying KPN was to
invest €4 billion to rollout the 3G phone network in Germany alone.
Around 80% of the €1.4 billion investment would be spent in its
Germany unit E-Plus to comply with license requirements there, KPN
said.
Scheepbouwer repeated earlier comments that the company was not
currently pondering a merger between E-Plus and mmO2's German unit.
3G license holders in Germany must cover 25% of the population
by 2003 and 50% by 2005.
Even though Germany handed out six 3G licenses, only four operators
remain after MobilCom and Quam existed.
