Hutchison 3G axe jobs in UK
December 5, 2002
Hutchison 3G of UK have said on Wednesday it will cut 60 to 80
jobs in the 200 staff product and market team, noting it plans to
launch commercial 3G service late this year or early next year.
The redundancies was needed, because much of the development work
had been completed and Hutchison now needs operational staff to
commercially launch 3G mobile phone network.
"We need operational and customer support staff rather than developers.
We gave details to employees today. It affects 60 to 80 people of
a total 200. We're hoping to re-deploy as many as possible but some
will be made redundant," said spokesman Matt Peacock.
Mr Peacock reinforced Hutchison's stance that it would only launch
3G when it was ready. "We go when it's ready. It's nearly ready,
but not quite yet. If we're comfortable we'll bring it before the
end of the year. I not, we won't. But it's a latitude of several
weeks," he said.
Hutchison expects to have 100,000 handsets available by the end
of the year.
Hutchison 3G of Italy have started taking orders for 3G handsets
via their website and expects to deliver them to customers before
the end of the year.
