Orange to launch 3G in 2003 for UK
December 5, 2002
Orange said on Thursday it expected to rollout full commercial
3G service in UK next year but plans for other countries would be
put on hold.
"Over the next three years, Orange will materially strengthen its
financial position and this will materially strengthen our ability
to take advantage of future strategic opportunities," said Graham
Howe, deputy CEO and chief operating officer.
"Outside the UK we have delayed implementation of 3G," he said,
and refers to the development in Sweden as 'currently on ice'.
But he said the company does not plan to write down the value of
3G licenses to reflect the delayed launch schedule. "There are no
immediate plans to write down licenses. We will review that at the
full year," said Howe.
The company said it expects to generate net cash flow from 2003
to end 2005 at some €5-7 billion higher than the current market
consensus.
"The €5-7 billion net cashflow improvement means we will be debt
free in the next two to three years," he said, adding that is ahead
of analysts forecasts by about two years.
Orange's parent company France Telecom unveiled a massive restructuring
programme and confirmed plans for a €9 billion government bailout.
