Nokia propose new wireless technology
December 8, 2002
Nokia announced they will offer a new wireless network technology
by 2004 designed eventually to combine the next generation mobile
network standards globally.
The mobile equipment maker is proposing the Global Wideband Code
Division Multiple Access (G-WCDMA) technology, initially for the
US.
Jukka Bergqvist, head of Nokia's mobile networks unit, said an
auction for a new radio airwave spectrum in the United States is
planned for mid-2004.
Standardization of the technology is "about ready" and more announcements
will be made early next year, Bergqvist said.
The aim of the new G-WCDMA standard is to unite the existing and
competing wireless broadband network standards WCDMA and CDMA2000
1x.
