KDDI Streaks Ahead In 3G
December 9, 2002 - source: BWCS
Japanese mobile operator KDDI reported today that its CDMA 3G customer
base now numbers over four million. The company said it is on track
to meet its own ambitious target of seven million 3G users by March
31, 2003.
The success of KDDI’s CDMA2000 system, which it launched in April
2002, stands in stark contrast to NTT DoCoMo’s W-CDMA version, launched
in October 2001, and which has fewer than 150,000 customers. DoCoMo
has consistently claimed that its service will do better once it
overcomes the problems of limited coverage and the unimpressive
battery life of the handsets.
The Vodafone-owned mobile operator J-Phone is due to enter the
3G market in Japan later this month. It plans to offer its W-CDMA
service mainly to business users and will offer international roaming
from the start. However, J-Phone president, Darryl Green, admitted
recently that the battery life in the W-CDMA 3G handsets was not
impressive.
In the Japanese mobile market as a whole, DoCoMo continues to dominate.
At the end of November the operator reported it had 42.48 million
customers compared to KDDI’s total of 13.31 million for its au service
and J-Phone’s 13.16 million.
