Apple will announce a new version of QuickTime before the end of the year compatible with 3G mobile phones in Japan marking its venture into the mobile industry. The firm will introduce QuickTime 6 that support 3GPP, based on the open standard MPEG-4 format. MPEG-4 is a standard for the delivery of digital audio and video to PCs, set-top boxes and wireless devices. Japanese mobile operator NTT DoCoMo announced three new handsets yesterday with 3GPP support. With QuickTime, cell phone users can create video content and view them on DoCoMo's 3G mobile phones. Users can use DoCoMo's phones to capture videos and email them to PC which can then be viewed with QuickTime. DoCoMo subscribers can download and watch news and sports clips in QuickTime. Customers can also watch movie trailers on their phone as well as buy tickets for the movie. Apple has placed its bets on MPEG-4 while rivals such as Microsoft have focused on promoting proprietary formats for digital media distribution. Microsoft and Real incorporate Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology in their file format, giving security against copying. The announcement of DoCoMo's latest handsets further promotes MPEG-4 as the standard for digital media distribution.
