NEC launches 3G Vird solution
December 13, 2002
NEC recently released its 3G Vird (visual real-time delivery) solution
that allows a video phone to function between a PC and a WCDMA 3G
mobile phone.
The company will target 3G Vird at Internet service providers,
telecom carriers, government and other public offices and companies,
aiming to achieve sales of Y30 billion (US$270million) in the coming
3 years.
NEC will provide software and hardware products such as MPEG4 encoders,
3G gateways and multi-cast distribution servers. In addition, it
will provide consulting and operation maintenance support.
The minimum configuration of 3G Vird is priced at Y2.28 million-
US$16,700 - (with 2-channel simultaneous connectivity). The system
supports up to a 1,000-channel configuration.
With 3G Vird, users can receive image contents, live images and
capture video with their 3G mobile phone, and store these images
in servers.
NTT DoCoMo is the only carrier in Japan to have commercial 3G WCDMA
services while J-Phone will launch WCDMA services during this month.
