Ericsson to increase involvement in cdma2000
December 13, 2002
Ericsson, the Swedish telecommunications equipment supplier, is
planning a big push towards CDMA, anticipating the wireless technology
could capture a much bigger share of the 3G mobile phone market
than previously thought.
The company is aiming to be one of the top three players in CDMA
and hopes to triple its market share to about 15%.
Ericsson, predicts WCDMA will have a share of about 80% of the
3G market and cdma2000 only 20%. But Per Arne Sandström, chief operating
officer, acknowledged it could easily turn into a 70:30 situation.
He said CDMA has strong presence in the US, South Korean and Japanese
market, and could achieve significant penetration in China and India.
Currently the three largest suppliers of CDMA equipment are Lucent,
Nortel and Motorola, all from North America.
Mr Sandström expressed Ericsson is playing catch-up but the situation
is improving. "We might be a little bit late to the market but we
have a strong global presence and we have really caught up with
our offering recently," he said.
