China United to trial 3G cdma2000 in 2003
December 13, 2002
It has bee reported that China United Telecommunications plans
to begin trials of 3G network in 2003. Wang Jianzhou, President
of the state owned mobile operator, said the trails will dependent
on government approvals.
China United will test equipment based on the CDMA2000 platform.
The operator's main rival, China Mobile Communications, has also
said it will begin tests of 3G technology next year.
Wang didn't give any indication of when China United might start
offering commercial services using 3G technology. China has been
patient in its approach to 3G. Following problems in Europe and
elsewhere, China will take its time in deciding when to launch 3G
and which 3G standard to deploy. It is not yet known when China
will issue 3G licenses to operators.
Apart from the cdma2000 and WCDMA technologies, Chinese operators
will also consider the home grown TD-SCDMA standard, which the developers
say is more efficient and cheaper than the two others. It has been
suggested that China may use all three standards in the future.
