EU official say no 3G boom before 2008
December 16, 2002
A boom in 3G mobile phone sales is unlikely before 2008, the European
Union's top telecoms official has warned. In an interview with German
Focus magazine, Erkki Liikanen said European mobile phone operators
have a long wait ahead of them before they get back their investments.
"The New Economy has produced plenty of hot air. That has slowed
investment in the telecommunications sector," Mr Liikanen said.
"We will have to wait at least five more years for a real boom in
UMTS."
He said that mobile phones that take and send photographs would
sell well.
The way that 3G licenses were auctioned off in Europe was criticised
because of the high prices in certain countries and large differences
in prices between countries. Mr Liikanen added that the European
Commission had always wanted to harmonise the way that UMTS licenses
were given out across Europe but he said that "the member states
fought that tooth and nail."
