Asia-Pacific Mobile Users will Grow from 312 Million in 2001 to
649 Million by Year-End 2006
December 18, 2002
According to a new Yankee Group report, "Asia-Pacific Mobile Subscriber
and Revenue Forecast 2002: An Oasis of Growth," the Asia-Pacific
region has remained a refuge of relative strength, with both wireless
subscribers and mobile service revenues continuing to expand at
a steady pace.
"The most obvious business opportunities in Asia-Pacific will continue
to come from the buildout of new networks over the next five years,
although many of the original projections are now being revised
downward," says report author Shiv Putcha, Yankee Group Wireless/Mobile
Asia-Pacific analyst. "In tandem with the enhanced deployment activity,
subscriber additions will come principally from China and India,
with the latter accounting for much higher growth rates over the
forecast period."
On the mobile data front, increased SMS and MMS traffic and revenues
in the developing markets, as well as new multimodal and business
applications in the developed markets, will combine to spur mobile
data usage and revenues. This will offset the steady erosion of
voice MOU and revenues across the region.
This report presents the Yankee Group's 2001 to 2006 Asia-Pacific
Wireless/Mobile forecast and analyzes the major trends, including
asymmetrical subscriber growth across the region, the continued
dominance of GSM in the technology mix, the success story of cdma2000
1x services in South Korea and Japan and the prepaid phenomenon
taking hold in the developing Asian markets.
