Reliance Infocom selects Comverse to enable prepaid services for its CDMA2000 network

December 23, 2002

Comverse, a unit of Comverse Technology, supplier of network-based multimedia enhanced communications services, today announced that Reliance Infocom has selected Comverse to enable prepaid and voicemail services for its CDMA2000 wireless local loop (WLL) wireless communications network in India.

Comverse's modular, technology-independent prepaid solution offers scalability to support millions of subscribers and seamlessly integrates into networks composed of multi-vendor switches implementing CDMA/TDMA/GSM technologies, separately or in mixed environments. Additionally, Comverse offers a rich set of service features adaptable to virtually any signaling environment, whether it is intelligent network (IN) or pre-IN based.

"Comverse is pleased to be joining the select circle of Reliance partners who are working to provide advanced communications throughout India," said Pushpendra Mankad, General Manager, Comverse India. "We are confident that our proven voicemail and prepaid service platforms will play a vital role in helping Reliance realize its vision for India. We believe this contract is the beginning of a long-term relationship that will contribute to Reliance's success in bringing world-class voicemail and real-time prepaid solutions to market."

"Reliance Infocom selected Comverse after a long and rigorous technical examination of its voicemail and prepaid platforms, as well as the business benefits that the solution offers. We put the Comverse solutions through their paces, and they came up a winner on all counts," said J. Thacker, Vice President of Procurement for Reliance Infocom. "We greatly value Comverse's local presence and experience in India, which is of critical importance in understanding and dealing with our vast and diverse markets."

The CDMA-compliant Comverse prepaid system will be deployed in India, supporting an initial 900,000 subscribers. This system is expected to grow across India and has the potential to be one of the largest prepaid deployments in the world, offering real-time control of calls. The Comverse prepaid system, which can be configured to run in all major wireless network environments, will support the IS-826 IN standard in the Reliance Infocom network. Reliance plans to utilize the flexibility of the Comverse prepaid system to offer a variety of different features and services in each market such as distance-based charging, concurrent tariffing schemes and VPN capabilities.
