DoCoMo developing Linux and WLAN3G handsets
December 3, 2003
NTT DoCoMo could offer 3G handsets using the Linux operating system as
early as the second half of 2004, a source close to the firm said on Tuesday.
Handset makers will receive specifications from the Japanese carrier
that would allow them to develop 3G phones suitable for Linux and help
them cut development and manufacturing costs.
It does not mean that all future 3G phones from DoCoMo will be running
Linux. DoCoMo will not force handset makers to use the Linux based software
and does not intend to prevent the use of other operating systems for
its 3G phones, the source said.
Japanese handset manufacturer NEC said it aimed to offer Linux based
handsets by the end of 2004.
Microsoft and Symbian develop the more popular operating systems for
smartphones. Linux is best known as a free desktop operating system and
popular in the open source community.
DoCoMo also said Tuesday that it had developed a prototype handset that
works with 3G and wireless local area networks. The dual mode handset
is aimed at corporate clients and allows them to access their company
servers in offices equipped with a wireless LAN. Wireless LAN is capable
of transmitting at speeds of 11 Mbps compared with DoCoMo's 3G network
at a top speed of 384 Kbps.
DoCoMo expects to launch the phone in the next business year starting
in April that it hopes would increase its 3G user base.
