The Saviour of 3G
December 3, 2003 - source: BWCS
After years of fruitless searching, it appears the 3G industry has finally
found its Saviour: Women. A survey commissioned by Siemens Mobile among
3,000 consumers in Germany, France and Britain found that the fairer sex
can’t wait to get their dainty fingers round a sleek new UMTS handset.
They send more text messages, want more traffic information and are more
interested in MMS than men, the study found.
But that’s not all. The survey also discovered that men consider technology
as an emotive subject, while women focus on functionality. Career women
in particular have a positive attitude towards UMTS, which promises to
help them juggle their lives more successfully, although both sexes expect
3G to become a market success. All this led Siemens Director Rudi Lamprecht
to conclude, “The results show that women play an important part in the
future of UMTS.”
So this is where Hutchison 3 has gone all wrong. It probably never occurred
to the operator to target women, and where are all the fluffy pink handsets?
Clearly, more research is needed to unearth further niche markets.
