KDDI suspends sales of EV-DO handsets
December 3, 2003
Japan's KDDI has temporarily suspended sales of new handsets for its
recently introduced advanced 3G service because of software glitches.
KDDI, the second largest mobile operator in Japan, launched its high speed
CDMA 1X WIN service based on CDMA2000 1x EV-DO technology on November
28.
The software problem leaves users unable to activate game software that
is downloaded after more than 6,000 data files such as e-mails are already
stored in the handsets, a KDDI spokesman said.
As of Monday, the company had sold around 7,200 of the faulty handsets
made by Hitachi. KDDI aims to continue sales of the new handsets on December
8 once the software problem is resolved. Hitachi will cover the cost of
the repair, the KDDI spokesman said.
EV-DO is an upgrade of CDMA2000 1X, which KDDI launched back in April
2002 and has a data transmission speed of 2.4 megabits per second. The
new service enables KDDI to introduce new content-rich services such as
live video distribution, video downloads, electronic publishing and multimedia
messaging with video capabilities.
