Spanish Operators to Plough Euro800 million into 3G
December 4, 2003 - source: BWCS
Spain’s four UMTS licence holders are planning to invest Euro800 million
in the rollout of their 3G networks by September 2004, according to a
report in today’s Cinco Dias. The investment will cover the installation
or acquisition of 5,500 base stations across the country, in addition
to 2,500 base stations already in place, the newspaper claimed.
Telefónica Móviles, Vodafone, Amena and Xfera all received their 3G licences
in a beauty contest held in March 2000, paying a total US$446.5 million
between them. While the initial deadline of August 2001 has become a distant
memory and even the extended launch date of June 2002 has long since slipped,
all four companies have signed up infrastructure partners and made some
progress towards network rollout. Telefónica started a pilot service in
October and is optimistic about a full commercial launch in 2004. It plans
to invest Euro1 billion in its 3G network until 2006, by which time it
hopes to have 8,000 base station installed across the whole of Spain.
Xfera is the only newcomer to the Spanish mobile market, while the other
three licence holders all operate GSM services. With 18.9 million subscribers
in mid-2003, Telefónica Móviles is the uncontested market leader, followed
by Vodafone with 8.5 million and Amena with 7.2 million customers.
