Vodafone live! key to 3G
December 5, 2003
3G is just a technology and service is what matters to the customers,
according to the view of Alan Harper, Vodafone strategy director. In an
interview with Nikkei Communications about Vodafone's 3G strategy in Europe,
he said the firm plans to launch the service in April-May 2004. Initially
there will only be limited number of handsets he added.
Vodafone has over 2 million users to its live! service, which Harper
believe is important to the group's 3G success. Once 3G is launched users
can download contents more quickly and feel more comfortable using the
service he said.
While video streaming is seen as a killer application for 3G, Harper
said it would take time for video services to penetrate the market. There
would need to be a gradual process for customers to get used to video.
Vodafone live! would be crucial for customers to get accustomed to the
video feature.
He said there is an increasing need in the corporate market to use a
mobile phone with a notebook PC for accessing company networks. Users
can access 3G service at a data rate of 200kbps when the network is rolled
out he added.
