Softbank to test 3G TD-CDMA

Japan's Internet and broadband group Softbank is applying for a license to test 3G mobile phone technology. It is not known whether the company intends to migrate to the mobile phone industry or consolidate existing telephony services.

Softbank has applied to the telecom regulator to test TD-CDMA technology. The technology is classified as a 3G standard but mobile operators in Japan are instead using WCDMA and CDMA2000 1X technologies. TD-CDMA is still mostly in the experimental phase.

Softbank did not say what kind of tests it would carry out or whether it planned to commercialise the technology.

Many operators use 3G technology to provide mobile phone services, but the technology could enhance Softbank's existing ADSL and IP telephony services by providing mobile data communications on the move. This seems to be the most likely commercial move because the company may not have the necessary finance to provide a nationwide mobile phone service following losses in the first half of this year and last year.
