Czech operators get 3G delay approval

The Czech government has reached an agreement with Eurotel Praha. and T-Mobile Czech Republic to alter the payments from 3G mobile phone licenses due to the push back of 3G service launch date.

The two firms will be allowed to delay rollout of 3G services until January 1 2006. Originally, the licenses required operators to rollout 3G services by January 1 2005. In return the government will shorten the payment time for the licenses to two payments in April and August 2003 from the original rolling payment that would have ended in 2011. The two companies together will pay 4.856 billion koruna ($1=CZK26.8).

Other license requirements are unchanged said the Czech Ministry of Information and Technology. The delay will give operators more time to plan their rollout schedule and strategy for their 3G business. Europe has been slow in the launch of 3G services and the technology is still not mature enough. The advanced payment will give the Czech government badly needed cash into the state budget in 2004.
