Hutchison Whampoa has scheduled a press conference for Monday in preparation for the launch of 3G services in Hong Kong.
Japan's NEC, handsets suppliers for Hutchison's 3G networks in Europe and Australia, will also attend the conference with president Akinobu Kanasugi expected to announce the NEC c616 model, a Chinese language handset.
"We are very excited about the new handset and what '3' is going to offer Hong Kong consumers," Hutchison spokeswoman Nora Yong said on Wednesday.
Hutchison has planned to launch 3G in Hong Kong in the summer of this year. The SARS virus in the region and infrastructure compatibility forced the company to delay the launch. Overseas engineers were forced to evacuate Hong Kong during the SARS outbreak and the network suffered teething technical problems. In June, Nokia's network equipment had to be ripped out after interoperability problems with NEC handsets. Siemens and NEC were called in to replace the equipment.
The firm has launched 3G in selected European countries and Australia, but a shortage of handsets meant the subscribers targets set for the UK and Italy would not be met. Hutchison has expected 1 million customers in the UK and Italy each by the end of the year, but the target now looks likely be reached by the middle of next year.
Last month, Chairman Li Ka-shing said the firm was ready to launch 3G in Hong Kong but will give handsets priority to markets elsewhere.
NEC is aiming to deliver 2-2.5 million handsets to Hutchison by end of this year.
