JTB considers 3G move
December 11, 2003
Jabatan Telekom Brunei (JTB) said it intends to enter the mobile phone
industry by demonstrating the 3G mobile call in Brunei. The firm will
give thoughtful consideration in participating for a 3G license.
The 3G trial system consists of a 3G exchange located at JTB Telephone
House in Sumbiling near the capital and two base stations located in Gadong
and JTB headquarters.
The firm has businesses in the fixed line telephone service, Internet,
payphone, data-communication and international call services.
The Acting Director said, "We thanked the Ministry of Communications
and the Authority for Info-Communications Technology Industry (AITI) for
giving us the approval to test the technology in Brunei."
"We have looked at the present trends in the telecommunications and followed
the mobile evolutions where the new subscribers are more keen to own a
mobile phone than a fixed line phone."
He added that in the future consumers will not be interested in the technologies
deployed but rather the services that operators will introduce through
the new technologies.
