3 services still boring
December 16, 2003
The chief operating officer of 3, Gareth Jones, has described the company's
services as boring in an interview with the Sunday Times. The former Orange
employee joined 3 in May to help the operator get out of trouble and claims
to be making progress. Problems that 3 encounter after launch was what
Jones expected.
"Systems are built with the best of intentions. When you turn them all
on and power them up, these things will not do what was originally thought
on day one," he said.
"For me, this is operational stuff we have to go through on any new network
launch. You have to patiently work your way through these issues."
He said 80% of new customers were registered within 24 hours and even
within an hour or so, where as previously some customers had to wait over
a week to register. Billing issues - such as sending out late bills and
to the wrong address - are also under control.
3 has heavily marketed its video calling service but Jones is holding
back his confidence in the service.
"I have no idea how big is going to be. I don't know if it's going to
be the next text messaging or not."
He said others services such as video highlights of Premiership football
matches can improve. "Technically, it's tremendous," he said. "But I'll
be honest with you - it bores the shit out of me."
Instead of alerting users to goals being scored, he wants the message
to show clips of the goal and reactions of the players and managers.
Jones said: "I have got between now and the beginning of next September
to get all of this in place. We will roll into the autumn of next year
as a serious, serious competitor in this market. Next Christmas is a real
big story for us."
