Yen37 billion investment for DoCoMo FOMA handsets
December 23, 2003
Japan's largest mobile operator NTT DoCoMo plans to invest 37 billion
yen ($343 million) over the next two years for the development of its
3G FOMA handsets.
The investment will be provided from next April and shared among six
firms including Fujitsu, Mitsubishi Electric, Motorola Japan, NEC, Sharp
and Panasonic Mobile Communications.
"Advanced handset capabilities are crucial to further enhancing the value
of these services to the user," DoCoMo said in a statement.
"By investing in development, DoCoMo aims to motivate manufacturers to
produce increasingly innovative handsets."
The operator would share ownership rights with the handset makers of
any new technologies.
The company had agreed with handset manufacturers earlier this year to
take on around half the research and development costs of FOMA phones.
They also encouraged handset makers to base their handsets on the Symbian
or Linux operating systems, snubbing Microsoft's rival operating systems.
DoCoMo said Linux offers openness and flexibility, something that is
not guaranteed Microsoft's operating systems.
