Not So Hungary for 3G

The Hungarian government has opted not to even begin the process of handing out 3G licences until the end of 2004. The telecoms minister, Kalman Kovacs, had said as recently as last month that he hoped the tender would be announced in the first quarter of 2004.

The new deadline came at a conference of foreign investors in the country’s telecoms industry. According to a report on Reuters the Hungarian government is also keen to issue a tender for a unified radio system for all its emergency services. This is expected to happen in early 2004.

Hungary, which has a population of 10.1 million and a mobile subscriber base of 7.61 million, was one of the first eastern bloc countries to allow foreign investors to take a stake in its national telecoms operator. The country is due to join the European Union in May 2004.
