Taiwanese mobile operator VIBO Telecom has announced it will launch its next generation mobile services on 6th December this year. VIBO, one of five 3G licence holders in the country, will take on Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, and Far EasTone Telecommunications in the battle for 3G customers.
According to the newcomer it will offer lower rates than its competitors. VIBO says it will charge only T$4.2 - T$4.8 (US$0.12 -US$0.14) per minute for voice calls on its own network and for those made to other services. The pricing strategy is designed to help VIBO win new customers quickly, as it does not have the cushion of an established 2G and 2.5G customer base to fall back on.
VIBO's W-CDMA network currently covers 97% of the population but the operator intends to increase this to 99.5% by the end of this year. The company has earmarked at least NT$10 million (US$298,000) to subsidize the price of 3G handsets during 2006. By the end of next year VIBO hopes to have over one million customers.
