Spanish telco Xfera is set to finally launch its next generation mobile operations in June of next year, according to reports in today's edition of El Mundo. The company, which first won a 3G licence in 2000, said it hopes to garner 600,000 customers by the end of next year.
According to El Mundo, the Hong Kong-based conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa is negotiating to try to purchase a controlling stake in the Spanish operator. Xfera has long delayed the launch of its 3G services, arguing that the market was not ready for the new offering.
Xfera's shareholders include the Nordic fixed and mobile telephony company TeliaSonera as well as a range of Spanish investors including: Actividades de Construccion y Servicios SA, Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas SA and Abertis Infraestructuras SA.
