Sun in talks on technology for 3G services

date: 16th February 2001, source by: thestar.com.my

Sun Microsystems has started talks with several local telecommunications operators on possible cooperation to develop technology related to third-generation services.

"There is a huge potential for wireless communications in the region and we want to be a part of it,'' said Sun Asia-Pacific industry director (telecommunications market) William Cowper in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Cowper said the company's participation in Asia had grown substantially in line with the acceleration in the technology adopted by countries in the region.

"At the current run rate, we expect to hit the US$1bil mark this year,'' Cowper said, adding that the group's revenues from the Asia-Pacific had also increased.

He said the region offered huge opportunities for wireless services because the penetration rate for Internet and mobile communication connectivity was still low.

Cowper expects growth in the wireless telecoms sector would initially be in the Asean region, with China and India fast catching on.

"We are looking for better ways to deliver quality multimedia services through the wireless environment,'' he said.
