Siemens/NEC venture gets UMTS order from Vivendi unit

date: 20th February 2001, source by: Handelsblatt.com

Siemens AG said Monday that it and NEC Corp. had been awarded a contract to build a Universal Mobile Telecommunications Systems network for Monaco Telecom, a unit of Vivendi Telecom International.

The contract will be carried out by a joint-venture between Siemens Information and Communication Mobile division and NEC Mobisphere.

A core network linked to existing telephone networks is to be provided by Siemens, while NEC will provide the UMTS terminals. The two plan to complete the constuction in time for the network to begin operations by summer 2001.

No financial details were disclosed.

Siemens said this is the twelfth contract for a UMTS (or third-generation) network that it has received within Europe so far. This makes it one of the two top companies for third-generation networks on the European continent.
