New billing platform from Vodafone
date: 20th February 2001
Vodafone UK has begun implementing a new billing platform for GPRS and
3G data services. Vodafone is due to officially launch its GPRS services
in the UK by the end of March.
According to Malcolm Mitchell, IT Director, Vodafone UK, Portal Software’s
Infranet system is being phased in to replace parts of Vodafone’s existing
proprietary software. Commenting that the company is clearly looking at
a business model that will change with time, he said it was having to
build a range of ways to bill a greater range of products. Infranet forms
part but not all of this capability.
"We want to charge on a variety of bases, time being one but also for
content or application, or by volume," he said. "We are building a base
capability to take us through that migration, [so that] we can bill in
ways best understood by the customer."
Implementation of the Infranet software in the UK is the first part of
a worldwide framework agreement between the two companies. Portal also
recently completed a deal with AOL, and its telco client base includes
Qwest, NTT, Deutsche Telekom, Telenor Mobil and France Telecom.
