Israel's Pele-Phone Seeks Bids For 3G Mobile Gear

date: 20th February 2001, source by: Reuters

Pele-Phone Communications Ltd., a joint venture of state-run Bezeq The Israel Telecommunication Corp. and Motorola Israel, said Tuesday it had asked six multinational telecoms companies to submit proposals for third-generation (3G) mobile phone network technology.

It said Ericsson, Hyundai, Lucent, Motorola, Nortel and Samsung had been asked to submit proposals for a 1X RTT CDMA2000 network in a contract worth hundreds of millions of shekels ($1=ILS4.1180).

The company currently uses CDMA technology in its second-generation network.

Pele-Phone said it would be ready to offer commercial 3G service in the first half of 2002 and to provide interim 2.5G service in the second half of 2001 through the use of high speed packet data technology.
