Hutchison unit says has Italy UMTS soccer rights

date: 22nd February 2001, source by: Reuters

Hutchison 3G Italia, holder of an Italian third-generation mobile phone service licence, said on Thursday it has acquired exclusive rights to transmit highlights of five Italian soccer clubs' games.

The company said its UMTS clients will be able to see home game highlights on their mobile phones of matches played, starting from the 2002-2003 season, by first division clubs AC Milan, Juventus and Bari and second division teams Genoa and Salernitana.

"We are also in talks with other clubs," Chief Executive Vincenzo Novari told a news conference. "We also have the rights of resale to other operators." He declined to give any financial details of the deal.

Hutchison 3G Italia is the new name of Andala, the company which won one of five third-generation UMTS licences last October. The operating unit Andala 3G is now called H3G.
