Motorola to Set up 3G Centre in Perth, Australia

date: 26th February 2001, source by: asiapulse.com

Motorola Inc today said it will set up a third generation (3G) wireless technology software centre of excellence within its $A50 million ($US26.2 million) software operation in Perth.

Motorola vice president Dr Terry Heng said the company will use the centre to ensure it remained at the cutting edge of rapidly emerging applications, handsets and network services for UMTS and other emerging communications applications.

Dr Heng was in Perth for the official signing of an agreement flagged in December that Motorola will establish its third Australian Software Centre at the University of WA.

The centre will initially employ 30 people, increasing to more than 200 within five years.

West Australian Minister for State Development Clive Brown said the agreement with Motorola would focus world software development attention on Perth.

"This agreement will see WA as a focal point in developing third generation technologies for mobile communication," he said.

The WA government will provide a $A4.5 million ($US2.36 million) industry incentive package with Motorola for the five-year first stage of the project.

UWA will invest $A15 million ($US7.86 million) to build a facility for Motorola while Motorola will invest $A35 million ($US18.34 million) over five years in salaries, recruitment and training as well as setting up advanced communication links, high speed local area networks and high powered work stations for software development.
