Monaco Telecom has chosen Siemens and NEC for the installation of a UMTS in the Principality of Monaco

date: 27th February 2001, source by: Siemens

Monaco Telecom, subsidiary of Vivendi Telecom International has chosen Siemens and NEC to install a UMTS network before the summer of 2001. Monaco Telecom will be one of the very first operators in Europe to offer applications and services to its users via a UMTS network. Its geographical and economic context provides an operator in Monaco with a cosmopolitan customer-base, in terms of both business and personal customers, with consumer behaviours in advance of those observable in neighbouring countries.

With control over all activities as an existing telecommunications operator, Monaco Telecom has the necessary competences for success in this first edition:

Control over varied telecommunications techniques: with a copper and optical fibre terrestrial system, satellite access, capacities in underwater cables, the operator controls high and low bandwidth systems and access.

Operation of the mobile network : in Monaco, the operator manages the GSM networks of the 3 French operators.

Capacities to provide multimedia content : Monaco Telecom owns a content-dedicated subsidiary offering contents specific to Monaco in the form of 2 portals : happy- monaco.com and monaco- infos.com. The suppliers chosen for the deployment of this UMTS network in Monaco are Siemens and NEC.

The radio side : NEC is supplying all radio equipment for radio coverage in Monaco.

The "Core Network" : Siemens is offering a UMTS solution starting in 2001 based on the development of its GSM core network platform. This platform can be upgradeable, with total reliability and stability, towards future UMTS standards, such as all IP, at the same time as cutting down on investments.

The applications : Siemens has developed a wide variety of solutions. Ranging from streaming through video-conferencing, each application is simple to install (Plug&Play) on the Siemens Core Network independently of the IP or ATM technology used by the operator. Once the network is open, users will be able to access services and applications offered by Siemens and its partners.

The terminals : NEC is offering UMTS terminals. Armed with its experience in the deployment of GSM networks, Siemens is taking charge, with NEC, of integrating the complete solution and providing a turnkey system to the operator.

The aim is to use a real environment to try out an end-to-end UMTS service - the technology, the terminals and the services. The network, which will be operational before the summer, shows the maturity of UMTS technology and the advance taken by Siemens and NEC in this field. This first edition will provide the Vivendi group, via its subsidiary Monaco Telecom, with access to essential information in the race towards the third generation mobile telephone.
