China Unicom Corp has won the right to operate a mobile phone service in Hong Kongdate: February 6, 2002 China Unicom International has been given a license to offer mobile virtual network operation (MVNO) when 3G services begins next year. This has been announced by Anthony Wong Sik-kei, director general of the Office of Telecommunications Authority (Ofta). They will also have the right to operate mobile service using the existing 2G networks. This is the third company to be given the MVNO license along with Trident Telecom Ventures and China Motion Telecom. It will give China Unicom the right to lease spectrum from the four Hong Kong mobile operators that has 3G licenses. The growing strength of the company will pose threats to leading Hong Kong operators. The move will provide better roaming services between HK and China. They will also be able to offer distinctive service and provide cross border services.
