Taiwan's 3G auction has endeddate: February 7, 2002 After 19 days and 180 rounds of bidding, Taiwan has awarded 3G mobile phone licenses to five companies. It has been one of the world's longest running and competitive auctions for 3G licenses. The total bid was NT$48.9 billion (US$1.4 billion) and ended up 45 percent higher than the floor price of NT$33.6 billion. Some analyst think the licenses are expensive and not necessarily worth the price as 3G may not peak until 2005. The chairman of winning bidder Far EasTone, Douglas Hsu, said, "Measured per megahertz per head of population, licences in Taiwan are cheaper than Singapore, Hong Kong and South Korea." So far, Japan's NTT DoCoMo is the only operator to have networks running. The suscessful bidders include: Far EasTone - NT$10.16 billion Taiwan PCS - NT$7.7 billion. Taiwan Cellular - NT$10.28 billion Chunghwa - NT$10.17 billion Eastern Broadband Telecom - NT$10.57 billion. The winners of the licenses can choose to pay by installment or in one go.
