Belgium delays 3G services rolloutdate: February 12, 2002 It is believed the launch of the third generation mobile network in Belgium will be delayed by a year. The Belgian government has postponed the launch date because neither both the network or the handsets are ready. The original date for launch was this September but because three operators with 3G licenses has requested for more time, the government decided to allow more development time. The companies that hold the licenses are France Telecom SA's Belgian mobile division Mobistar, the former state monopoly Belgacom SA and Vodafone Group PLC's mobile phone company Proximus, and Dutch operator KPN Orange's Belgian unit of the same name. Jean-Luc Van Kerckhoven, spokesman for Proximus, said, "We are satisfied that we now have a year more to build the network. If we had to launch this in September then 3G would have been a disappointment. With an extra year we will be able to make it a real commercial launch." Sweden was the first country in Europe to launch their 3G networks, but they still aren't offering any services.
