New Sim card for 3G

date: February 13, 2002

Smart card solution provider Setec introduces a new SIM card, the eSIM™ 3G, for third generation mobile networks. The new SIM card has an EEPROM memory capacity of 64 K bytes and it supports GSM functionality. These features make it an ideal SIM card platform to migrate from 2G to new 3G services. Setec's third generation SIM cards are available in the third quarter of 2002.

As the new USIM card complies with both GSM and 3G requirements, all the mobile services offered today can be accessed with this new card. The card enables the operator to offer a wide range of value-added-services such as m-commerce, m-banking, as well as information, entertainment and gaming services. It also stores valuable contact information, for example phone numbers, e-mail and Internet addresses.

The eSIM™ 3G is a multi-application and multi-standard card supporting both ETSI and ISO standards. This makes it easy to implement different types of services on a single card. Thanks to the card's advanced cryptographic capabilities, user authentication in value-added-services can be based on PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) technology, which is a necessity in e.g. banking and payment solutions. In addition, WAP based services can make full use of the card's WIM security functionality. Setec's eSIM™ 3G card offers an open application toolkit platform to develop new applications and services.

Mr Pekka Santanen, Senior Vice President at Setec states: "Third generation mobile networks will enable services such as mobile Internet access, multimedia, video conferencing and mobile commerce in different mobile devices. All these services rely on the third generation SIM card to provide the required security so that network operators, service providers and the users can be mutually identified and authenticated."
