Siemens to supply Proximus with UMTS equipmentdate: February 15, 2002 Siemens Information and Communication Mobile (IC Mobile) are going to supply the Belgium mobile operator Proximus with UMTS technology. They will provide Proximus with switching equipment. Proximus has been using Siemens's switching equipment and internet services (WAP) since 1996. Laurent Claus, Director Engineering and Operations Proximus, said, "The contract we've signed with Siemens IC Mobile, as a reliable partner, is a major step for us that means we will be able to offer services of the third mobile generation to our customers in Belgium." Dr. Valentin Chapero Rueda, Head of the Networks Division of IC Mobile said they were delighted that Proximus will be using their UMTS technology. Along with its partner NEC, IC Mobile's UMTS technology are being employed by 17 mobile carriers in Europe and Asia in a number of test runs. These test establish voice and data transmission in UMTS test networks and existing GSM and fixed networks. Last year, Siemens IC Mobile/NEC successfully implemented a operational UMTS network in Isle of Man and Monaco.
