Wireless messaging with color

date: February 18, 2002

Live Demonstration of Animated Multimedia Messaging by Logica and FunMail

Visitors to the Logica booth at the 3GSM World Congress 2002 can live the true multimedia messaging experience. Based on animated content provided by FunMail Inc., Logica is demonstrating delivery of full color animated images over a GPRS network to a wide range of mobile devices via the Logica Multimedia Messaging Service Centre (MMSC).

FunMail offers one such exciting visual service based on their unique wireless animated messaging technology. Using a combination of powerful rendering and natural language processing technologies, FunMail generates a relevant entertaining animation based on the context of a text message. The resulting full color image is forwarded to Logica's Multimedia Messaging Centre for transcoding and onward delivery to the destination mobile device to which it can be delivered as a multimedia message, EMS or Nokia Picture Message, depending on the handset capabilities. FunMail has also been specially optimized to leverage the capabilities of rich media handsets such as the popular Sony Ericsson T68 series.

Multimedia Messaging (MMS) enables mobile subscribers to incorporate mixed-mode, personalized content into their communications, including text, pictures, photos, animations, speech, music and even video. With MMS, mobile phone users can expect to avail themselves of compelling new services such as photo messages, greeting cards, animated cartoons, entertainment, promotions and sports clips.

The Logica MMSC is a high performance, scaleable messaging engine for management and delivery of large volumes of MMS messages. It offers full messaging interoperability between MMS, EMS Smart Messaging and SMS by transcoding the multimedia content into a format suited to the characteristics of the destination device, thus optimizing the user experience.

"Multimedia brings messaging to life," said Gerry McKenna, CEO of Logica Mobile Networks. "The color animated images we are demonstrating with our partner FunMail really highlight the rich user experience of multimedia messaging. At Logica, we believe that multimedia messaging will be pivotal to the future of mobile services and we have shown that we can offer the multimedia experience on a whole range of mobile devices available in the market today."

"Animation is the perfect format for GPRS -- high impact at low bandwidth," said FunMail CEO, Adam Lavine. "We are proud to have the world's first carrier-grade animated messaging platform, and proud to be working with an industry leader like Logica to bring FunMail services to wireless operators worldwide."
