Success for CDMA at the Olympicsdate: February 18, 2002 CDMA wireless operators and manufacturers are delivering advanced communications services in Salt Lake City, site of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDMA Development Group (CDG), today commented: "CDMA continues to bring advanced data services to life, which is evident through the technology's dominant footprint at this year's Olympic Winter Games. The CDMA community has done an excellent job delivering on the promise of cutting-edge applications and superior voice services." Four CDMA network operators are providing services in Salt Lake City, two of which are offering 3G. Verizon Wireless is operating its 3G services based on CDMA2000, providing customers access to advanced mobile services. Sprint PCS is previewing its next-generation CDMA2000 network, which is scheduled for commercial roll out in mid-2002. Applications that are being utilized in Salt Lake City include wireless gaming, music download and multimedia capabilities. Qwest PCS, the official telecommunications provider of the Olympics, and Leap are also offering wireless services via CDMA technology. In addition to CDMA network operators, device manufacturer Samsung is showcasing 16 of its wireless devices during the Olympic games to fans from around the world. The company is also providing the SCH-T300, the official mobile phone of this year's Olympics. The CDMA Development Group is a nonprofit trade association formed to foster the worldwide development, implementation and use of CDMA technologies. The 110 member companies of the CDG include many of the world's largest wireless operators and equipment manufacturers. The primary activities of the CDG include development of cdmaOne(TM) and CDMA2000 features and services, public relations, education and seminars, regulatory affairs and international support. Currently, there are more than 500 individuals working within various CDG subcommittees on cdmaOne- and CDMA2000-related matters.
