QUALCOMM Provides Wireless Solutions for European Market

Live UMTS/GSM Demonstrations, and Multimedia and Position Location Solutions, Highlight Support for Operators and Manufacturers in Rollout of 3G Products and Services.

QUALCOMM Incorporated, pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today presented its wireless technology solutions for the European marketplace at the annual 3GSM World Congress in Cannes. With the world's largest customer base of wireless device manufacturers, QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies (QCT), the chipset and system software group within QUALCOMM, provided live-call UMTS and GSM demonstrations using the Company's chipset and system software-supported test mobiles. QCT also provided a technology demonstration of a Java J2ME solution executing on a Mobile Station Modem (MSM(TM)) baseband device, and profiled its high-accuracy positioning capability, based on its proven wireless Assisted GPS(TM)solution from SnapTrack, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of QUALCOMM.

The MSM5200(TM) single-mode baseband chipset and system software, used for the UMTS test mobiles, began sampling to device manufacturers in September 2001. Interoperability testing and verification using the UMTS test mobiles is now underway with a number of infrastructure manufacturers.

MGP6200(TM) multimode GPS processor, provide a range of UMTS products that address the need for greater market segmentation. The MSM5200 and MSM6200 chips support the Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) mode of WCDMA (UMTS), with data rates of up to 384 kilobits per second (kbps). The MSM6200 chip, a multimode single-chip solution, offers backward compatibility, supporting GSM and GPRS technologies, and features QCT's radioOne(TM) direct RF-to-baseband conversion technology, which eliminates the need for large IF Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) filters and additional IF circuitry. Both of these chipsets support various features of the Wireless Internet Launchpad(TM) suite of advanced technologies and software, as well as QUALCOMM's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless (BREW(TM)) applications platform.

The MGP6200 solution, designed as a companion chip for the MSM6200 chipset, uses the proven Assisted GPS (AGPS) fast-convolution hardware core and software algorithms from SnapTrack. This solution will enable high-performance position location operation anytime, anywhere -- even indoors where conventional GPS does not operate.

"Our goal is to supply the chipsets and system software that will enable our European partners to bring exciting new wireless products and services to market quickly and cost-effectively."

Sample shipments of QCT's MSM5200 chipset and system software are under way, with manufacturers designing products around the solution. Sample shipments of QCT's 6200 solution are expected in the third quarter of calendar 2002. An MGP6200 chipset solution will be available inside a small, commercial-quality test phone from QUALCOMM in fourth quarter of calendar 2002 to enable commercial trials by wireless operators.
