InterDigital Demonstrates Key Elements of a Complete 3G WCDMA Solution

date: February 20, 2002

InterDigital Communications Corporation, a leading architect, designer and provider of wireless technology and product platforms, today demonstrates the critical elements of a complete 3G Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) solution at the wireless industry's premier event, the 3GSM World Congress.

The Company is conducting two separate but related demonstrations that highlight the two main components of a full solution for 3G. The combination of Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and Wideband Time Division Duplex (WTDD) technologies will enable equipment producers and operators to fulfill the promise of 3G and meet growing consumer demand for data-intensive services.

InterDigital is showcasing the functionality of its FDD multi-mode protocol stack designed for mobile devices. The Company is developing this software with Comneon for use with existing GSM/GPRS software and hardware, enabling manufacturers to produce tri-mode 3G handsets.

The FDD demonstration includes a physical layer interface (layer1), layer 2/3 software and a software development kit (U-HT) by Anite Telecoms. The demonstration platform supports Infineon's M-GOLD chip, is compatible with Comneon's Man Machine Interface (MMI) application framework (APOXI) and Universal Subscriber Information Mobile (USIM) toolkit, and is portable to other baseband processors.

InterDigital's TDD demonstration highlights WTDD technology, a technology the Company is developing to operate seamlessly and harmoniously with FDD. This demonstration shows a complete 3G standards compliant TDD technology platform for mobile devices and infrastructure.

The demonstration platform interfaces with proven FDD/GSM hardware and software solutions and includes a TDD Modem Module (TMM), TDD processing Unit Module (TPU), and TDD RF Module (TRF). The demonstration highlights InterDigital's pioneering work in defining the TDD standard and developing a complete TDD air interface solution for terminal and infrastructure products.

Mark Lemmo, Executive Vice President, Product Management stated, "We believe that a complete UMTS WCDMA solution will deliver the most efficient use of spectrum and enable operators to maximize their average revenue per user. The FDD UMTS Access Stratum protocol stack is being designed, developed, and tested using state of the art tools and methodologies. The result is a solution that provides the highest level of stability and performance while simultaneously allowing for rapid technology transfer and ease of customization. We are highlighting significant progress in developing TDD technology and will offer it to customers in hardware and software products, including chips for 3G devices, and through technology transfer."

InterDigital is one of the world's leading developers of TDD technology. The Company has made more than 500 contributions to 3G standards groups that are defining the TDD standard and is developing TDD technology platforms to enable 3G products to deliver data-intensive services. TDD supports all voice and data applications, providing efficient use of 3G UMTS spectrum.

Operating in a single frequency band, it is the most effective air interface for asymmetric "bursty" applications that will provide significant revenue and earnings enhancement for network operators and application developers. In addition, WTDD is cost-efficient for network deployment because it leverages the infrastructure of an FDD-only rollout of 3G.

Comneon has been developing and marketing GSM software since 1990 and has accumulated more than 400 man-years of experience in the development of GSM protocol software. The track record of successful GSM projects includes more than 20 type approvals of GSM phase 1, phase 2 and phase 2+ demonstrating its high competence in all areas of GSM/GPRS/UMTS mobile communications.

Committed to excellence, Comneon has been using state-of-the-art tools for software development and configuration management. All processes are performed in accordance with the principles of Total Quality Management. Anite Telecoms develops and markets testing platforms for wireless communications at the terminal and network levels. Anite's solutions enable the rapid and reliable deployment of leading edge communication services and products for 2G, 2.5G, and 3G technologies. Anite's Dual Radio Access Technology (RAT) is leading edge for testing multiple radio standards.
