Demonstration of UMTS 3GPP Packet Data Call

date: February 20, 2002

Three Companies Continue to Succeed in Making 3G Applications a Reality

Nortel Networks, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., and PrairieComm, Inc. today announced successful execution of a UMTS 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project) packet data call on a form-factor handset.

The call is the most recent UMTS accomplishment since the three companies announced their relationship one year ago at the GSM World Congress.

In conjunction with Samsung and PrairieComm, Nortel Networks is demonstrating the data call on a commercial form factor at the 2002 GSM World Congress, held in Cannes, France. The Nortel Networks Demonstration Centre is based at the Majestic Hotel opposite the World Congress Centre.

"Each company has focused on its core competence and coupled with the close cooperation between the organizations, this has enabled the relationship to be in a market leading position for the rollout of UMTS in 2002," said Alain Biston, general manager UMTS, Nortel Networks.

"Samsung is very pleased to succeed in the execution of a UMTS 3GPP packet data call. This recent achievement is the proof that the relationship between Nortel Networks, PrairieComm and Samsung can effectively leverage the synergy of their wireless core competencies," said Byung-duck Cho, senior vice president of Mobile Communications R&D, Samsung Electronics Co. "We believe that our close cooperation is key to the improvement of customer satisfaction and industry development."

"This alliance with Samsung and Nortel Networks is speeding the development of 3G UMTS technology," said Ed Roney, vice president of Products and Systems, PrairieComm. "Together we are bringing this technology to commercial realization to meet the carriers' schedules for launching their 3G networks."

Over the past year, the companies have achieved a number of milestones in the rollout and development of 3G infrastructure, terminals and services. In the summer of 2001, they completed a UMTS circuit-switched voice call. Other achievements included mobile originated calls, mobile terminated calls, and mobile-to-mobile calls on a form-factor handset.

UMTS packet data enables service providers and application developers with the necessary high-speed transport capability to energize the wireless data revolution. UMTS packet data provides 'always on,' high-speed data transmission. UMTS packet data will allow introduction of applications such as m-commerce, videophone, music and video streaming and Web browsing.
