Nokia products enhance and optimize WCDMA

date: February 20, 2002

Nokia, as the world leading 3G WCDMA supplier, strengthens its WCDMA portfolio by introducing four new products at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France.

Nokia MetroSite Piccolo WCDMA Base Station solves operators' problems in urban site acquisition in a cost-efficient way. This physically small and easy-to-hide base station turns 'difficult' locations into feasible sites. It further complements the extensive Nokia WCDMA base station family and is designed for boosting 3G capacity in high-density areas where normal sites are scarce or expensive.

Nokia Advanced Indoor Radio for WCDMA is a revolutionary fiber-optical distribution system. The system is fully integrated to Nokia UltraSite WCDMA base stations. It provides an optimised radio path and offers cost-reduction of indoor coverage by up to 50% compared to existing solutions. A single base station can, for instance, provide simultaneous coverage by both outdoor macrocells and indoor cells in neighboring buildings. A base station can also be shared between the cells of multiple operators. Due to its minimal entry cost and high scalability, this solution is perfect for any building regardless of size.

Nokia RealTilt for WCDMA allows real-time adjustment of an antenna's tilt angle, enabling dynamic network optimization under changing load conditions. Optimizing the antenna tilt angle can improve the 3G WCDMA network's capacity by up to 40%. This capacity potential, however, can only be realized by reacting immediately to the varying traffic conditions in typically thousands of cells. By using manual optimization methods, only a fraction of the potential benefits can be obtained -- at the price of a high number of costly site visits. Nokia RealTilt allows maximum capacity improvement by remote real-time optimization of the antenna tilt angle. Remarkable savings in operating costs are realized, as the need for site visits for antenna adjustment is eliminated.

Nokia mPosition for WCDMA offers operators and their customers mobile location-based services such as "friends finder" and fleet management. Emergency service requirements will be covered as well. The Nokia mPosition is a cost-efficient end-to-end mobile location solution, which supports the smooth evolution from 2G to 3G. Nokia mPosition for WCDMA is fully committed to location methods standardized by 3GPP.

"We already have an end-to-end 3G solution available, and with these advanced solutions we further help our customers to build a unique 3G service offering and to achieve it at the lowest cost," says Eero Vallstrom, Vice President and General Manager, WDCMA RAN, Nokia Networks. "Since autumn 2001, operators globally have been rolling out Nokia's 3G WCDMA radio-access network products in volumes. They will soon obtain further benefits as Nokia launches several service and performance optimization solutions. These advanced solutions enhance the operators' revenue potential and reduce the network capital, implementation and operating expenditures.

All the new enhancements are fully compatible with existing products."
